How to Change Your Name After Marriage in Delhi

By Advocate Amit Ji · Updated: August 2026

Changing your surname after marriage is entirely optional in India. However, if you choose to adopt your spouse's surname, the process must be formally documented to avoid legal friction when dealing with banks, passports, and visas.

1. The Prerequisite: Marriage Certificate

Before any ID can be updated, you must possess a legally valid, government-issued Marriage Registration Certificate. A certificate from a Mandir, Gurudwara, or Qazi is not sufficient for updating your Passport or PAN Card.

2. Step-by-Step Name Change Process

  • Draft an Affidavit: You need a notarized affidavit declaring your maiden name, your new married name, your spouse's name, and the date of marriage.
  • Newspaper Publication: Publish a notification of your name change in two local newspapers (one in English and one in Hindi/regional language). Keep original copies of these publications.
  • Gazette Notification (Optional but Recommended): For the most bulletproof legal status, submit your application, affidavit, and newspaper clippings to the Department of Publication in Delhi. The name change will then be officially printed in the Gazette of India.

3. Updating Your Key Documents

Once you have your Marriage Certificate and Name Change Affidavit (or Gazette Notification), you can proceed to update your IDs:

  • Aadhaar Card: Visit an Aadhaar enrollment center with your Marriage Certificate.
  • PAN Card: Apply for a PAN correction online via NSDL or UTIITSL, using your Marriage Certificate and updated Aadhaar as proof.
  • Passport: Apply for the "Re-issue of Passport" under the "Change in Existing Personal Particulars" category.

Start with Your Marriage Certificate

The entire name-change framework rests on a legally registered marriage. If your marriage has not yet been registered in court, this must be your first step. Our team can guide you through the registration to expedite your name change process.
